Reflex

by Steven Gould

Reading shitty books when you're supposed to be doing other things is about the least destructive type of self-destructive behaviour I've hit on yet.

Jumper

by Steve Gould

Samuel L. Jackson is not in this book. If the only thing the book has in common with the movie is that the guy can teleport, I think they could have called the movie any of a billion different names.

The Prince of the Marshes

by Rory Stewart

Finished Today.
I guess even the people who made some right decisions couldn't get things to work out in Iraq. Not in 1-2 years, anyway.

The Little Prince

by Antoine de Saint Exupéry

Not sure what to say about this one yet.

Valencia

by Michelle Tea

Really interesting to see inside this world, but man, so many drugs. Too many - I wish I could find out what happens to the characters 25 years later, like at the end of A Scanner Darkly.

The Amber Spyglass

by Philip Pullman

Some interesting ideas and interesting images, but man, obvious religious evangelism is cheesy and lame, even when it's for my religion.

The Long Walk Home - Paul Franklin's Journey from Afghanistan >>> A Soldier's Story

by Liane Faulder

Finished today.
So, in case the fact that there are three titles didn't tip you off, this isn't very professionally written. But, it's about a good guy, and his story is interesting, if unfinished.
Oh, and the guy the book is about handed me my copy right after he signed it for me. I didn't even intend to buy the book (I had never heard of it) until I saw him there.

Dream Angus

by Alexander McCall Smith

Finished today.
It was weird to read Alexander McCall Smith writing something that wasn't light-hearted comedy, but it was good.

The Subtle Knife

by Philip Pullman

Finished today.
These books aren't really books. They're each like 1/3 of a book. They're still good, though.

Monday, August 27, 2007

Our Friends from Frolix 8

by Philip K. Dick

Ah, Philip K. Dick. You start out thinking it's cheesy but then it gets just crazy enough to be awesome.

The Unbearable Lightness of Being

by Milan Kundera

I thought the only thing I would like about this book is the title, but I loved it. The whole book.

The Golden Compass

by Philip Pullman

Finished Today
Finally, a book that I can give the "girls" tag.

The Gods Themselves

by Isaac Asimov

Finished today.
I still love Asimov, but don't bother reading anything he wrote that was more than 200 pages or so. It was boring, even though it was about melty three-way alien sex and how in the future men and women on the moon will be hot and naked all the time.

[UPDATE: It was still a bit too long, but I liked this much better the second time I read it.]

Dog Day Afternoon

by Patrick Mann

Finished today.
Man, books from the 70's. Too much misogyny.

Thursday, May 17, 2007

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

by J.K. Rowling

Finished today.
And I thought I may be starting too late to finish them all by July 21st.

Monday, May 14, 2007

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

by J.K. Rowling

Finished today.
The writing isn't as good as I remember, but I think the story is even better.

Monday, May 7, 2007

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

by J.K. Rowling

These are more interesting the second time around. There's more to pick up on. Like, the Lovegoods live near the Weasleys?

Sunday, April 22, 2007

Fantastic Voyage II; Destination: BRAIN!

by Isaac Asimov

Finished today.
I love Asimov, but this was pretty bad. Not just because it didn't teach me about brain structure like I had hoped.

Sunday, April 15, 2007

Harry Potter and the Prizoner of Azkaban

by J. K. Rowling

Finished today.
I'd better not take any more of these out of the library until I finish my term papers.

Friday, April 13, 2007

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

by J.K. Rowling

If I keep reading childrens' books, I'll reach 50 this year, easy.

Wednesday, April 11, 2007

Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone

Stupid American printing. Anyway I'm reading these to prepare for book 7.

Intuition

Even the comic relief was tense.

Monday, March 12, 2007

Silence

Finished today.
I can't believe this guy isn't an atheist.

Thursday, March 8, 2007

That this is a true story defies reason

Earth

Reminds me of OAC World Issues. Any time a gazer went off it was cool.

Imperial Life in the Emerald City

by Rajiv Chandrasekaran

Great information. Never make hiring decisions based on ideology or loyalty, and try to learn about the people you are working with.

Wednesday, January 17, 2007
